Alloway Cottage looks like somebody mixed buttercream, peach, blush, and just enough lavender to make everyone argue about what color it actually is.
Bred by Jock Stitt in New Zealand, Alloway Cottage is a classic formal decorative dahlia with large blooms that refuse to stay neatly inside one color family. Flowers typically open in soft creamy lemon and buttery yellow tones, often carrying a blush of peach or pink, while some blooms develop cooler lilac or lavender tones toward the center. Our own plants showed that color shift beautifully—from almost pure lemon cream to warmer peach-and-blush combinations depending on the bloom and the light.
The flowers generally reach about 6–8 inches across, with broad, orderly petals that build into a substantial formal decorative bloom. Plants typically grow around 4 feet tall, making them large enough to put on a proper show without requiring their own zoning permit. Multiple growers also note strong stems and good cutting performance, which explains why this old variety has managed to stick around while countless others quietly wandered off into dahlia history.
And Alloway Cottage really does have history. Introduced in 1970, it became one of Jock Stitt’s most successful introductions, earning international recognition including Best Foreign Introduction in Holland in 1972 and an Award of Merit at the Scottish trials in 1974. The “Alloway” name comes from the Scottish birthplace of poet Robert Burns—a nod to Stitt’s own Scottish roots before he made his home in New Zealand. Peters Dahlien
Moose's Take: Alloway Cottage is proof that a dahlia does not need neon colors or petals doing gymnastics to get attention. It just stands there looking expensive, sophisticated, and slightly smug about the fact that people have been admiring it for more than fifty years. Frankly, if I looked this good at fifty, I'd be smug too.
