Some dahlias politely wait for the flowers to do all the work.
Domaine de Chaumont Sur Loire apparently never received that memo.
Before the first bloom even opens, this French variety is already showing off with exceptionally dark foliage, dusky stems, and a compact, bushy habit. Then the flowers arrive—and suddenly the whole plant looks like somebody turned the saturation knob up.
The blooms are approximately 4–5 inches across and fall somewhere in that wonderfully difficult-to-name territory between salmon, coral, rose and warm orange. Outer petals can glow coral-salmon while the center develops much deeper raspberry-red tones, giving the flower considerably more depth than a single-color dahlia. Depending on temperature, light and bloom age, individual flowers can lean rosier or warmer orange, which is part of the fun.
And against that dark foliage?
Ridiculous.
This isn't merely a pretty flower sitting on an ordinary green plant. Domaine de Chaumont Sur Loire creates contrast from top to bottom, with the dark leaves and stems making those luminous blooms look even brighter.
The variety has some legitimate French credentials, too. It was introduced and named for the Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire—the renowned garden and château estate overlooking the Loire River—and was subsequently selected as a French Label Rouge dahlia. That distinction is awarded after evaluation for overall garden performance, including qualities such as flowering and plant habit.
So yes, the fancy French name actually comes with paperwork.
Plants are naturally compact and extremely floriferous, generally staying around 2 feet tall rather than attempting the traditional dahlia maneuver of becoming a six-foot shrub while you're not looking. That makes Domaine de Chaumont Sur Loire especially useful near the front of a flower bed, in larger containers, or anywhere you want serious flower production without giving up half the garden.
It also cuts beautifully. The blooms are large enough to command attention in an arrangement without entering dinner-plate territory, and those warm salmon-coral shades play exceptionally well with creams, blushes, apricots and deeper burgundy tones.
Moose Translation:
This is what happens when France names a dahlia after a château garden.
Of course it has dark foliage.
Of course the flowers are salmon-coral.
Of course it looks expensive.
The Moose is just grateful they didn't require us to ship it wearing a tiny beret.
