Formby Pearl

Formby Pearl is proof that a dahlia doesn't have to scream for attention to steal the show.

Bred by George Harding in Devonport, Tasmania, Australia, this elegant Formby variety produces beautifully refined blooms in creamy white and ivory with a soft blush-pink center, sometimes developing hints of lilac or lavender as the flowers mature. The color is subtle, polished, and just fancy enough to make the rest of the bouquet look like it suddenly dressed for dinner.

The blooms are typically around 2½–3½ inches across, with a neat, rounded form and tightly arranged petals. Plants generally reach about 3½–4½ feet tall and are known for producing plenty of flowers on strong stems, making Formby Pearl a particularly useful choice for cutting gardens and bouquets.

This is one of those dahlias that earns its keep. It is soft enough for weddings and pastel arrangements, refined enough for the collector garden, and productive enough that you do not have to admire it from afar like some high-maintenance garden celebrity.

Moose's Take: Formby Pearl is the dahlia equivalent of showing up in pearls without making a big deal about it. Quietly elegant, ridiculously useful, and somehow making everyone else look a little more put together.
