Short Teaser

A cool-toned Austrian beauty with dreamy lilac-fuchsia blooms and elegant waterlily form, Hapet Blue Sea looks like somebody tried to make the color purple flirt with blue and somehow got away with it. 🫎

Full Description

Some dahlias are cheerful.

Hapet Blue Sea is flat-out mesmerizing.

Bred by Peter Haslhofer of Austria, this refined Waterlily dahlia produces beautifully shaped blooms measuring about 4–6 inches across. The flowers open in that classic waterlily style growers lose all self-control over — broad, gracefully layered petals arranged in a bloom that looks polished, elegant, and just dramatic enough to know it is gorgeous.

And then there’s the color, which is where this thing starts showing off.

Depending on the light, Hapet Blue Sea can read as light lilac, fuchsia-purple, or almost bluish lavender, with a cool-toned glow that makes it stand out from the usual pink crowd. It is not truly blue, because dahlias enjoy toying with our emotions, but it absolutely has that rare cool cast that makes people stop, squint, and say hold on… what color is that?

Plants grow to roughly 3.3–4 feet tall, forming bushy, upright clumps that carry the blooms nicely above the foliage. It also has a reputation for being extremely floriferous, with Peter’s own description calling it an unsurpassed top variety for bloom production. That is Moose language for: this plant did not come to play. It came to crank out flowers until you run out of buckets.

Moose Logic says:

When a breeder names a dahlia Blue Sea, you know they are trying to get all of us dahlia people to lose our minds over a cool-toned purple.

Mission accomplished.
