RM Copper Shimmer is proof that somebody finally found a productive use for all those pennies hiding under the couch cushions.

This 2026 introduction from Hailey and Mike of River Merle Farm in Olympia, Washington, produces approximately 3-inch blooms in rich, warm copper tones. But “copper” only gets you halfway there. When sunlight hits the flowers, the petals develop a noticeable shimmer, finished with touches of gold at their tips.

Basically, Mother Nature found the metallic crayon box.

The blooms are Miniature Formal Decorative in form, with layers of neatly arranged petals packing an impressive amount of flower into a relatively compact 3-inch package. As the blooms mature and fill out, River Merle says they remind them of large, fully double zinnias.

Plants grow approximately 4.5 feet tall, and River Merle describes them as being packed with blooms throughout the season. That smaller flower size also makes RM Copper Shimmer particularly useful when you want rich autumnal color in a bouquet without one enormous dinner-plate dahlia elbowing everybody else out of the vase.

What really separates this one from the herd, though, is how much the color depends on the light. Indoors, you get those beautiful warm copper tones. Put the bloom in the sunshine and suddenly the shimmer and gold-tipped petals start doing their thing.

It's a flower with a lighting requirement.

Apparently we've reached the stage where the dahlias have riders in their contracts.

Moose’s Take

Moose has spent enough years growing dahlias to know that flower colors occasionally require a little imagination.

“Dusty antique apricot blush” sometimes means orange.

“Smoky mauve” occasionally means pink having an identity crisis.

But RM Copper Shimmer actually brought receipts.

The copper is there. The shimmer is there. The little gold tips are there. And when the sunlight catches the flower, suddenly you understand exactly why Hailey and Mike gave it the name.

What really seals the deal for The Gardening Moose is the combination of that unusual coloring with a compact 3-inch bloom. It's not trying to overwhelm you with size. It just keeps producing these densely packed little metallic-looking flowers and waits for the sun to handle the special effects.

No batteries.

No glitter.

No craft-store cleanup.

For once, Moose can enjoy something sparkly without finding it in his fur for the next six months.

Shipping & Delivery

Rooted cuttings ship April 1 – May 15 via UPS 2nd Day Air. Orders are shipped when plants are ready and weather conditions are appropriate for safe travel. Because of the volume of orders we process during shipping season, orders cannot be combined. You’ll receive tracking information when your order ships.

What You'll Receive

You’ll receive a healthy, actively growing rooted dahlia cutting that has been professionally propagated and grown by Dapper Dahlias By Moose.

Once fully rooted, the plant is removed from its growing container with the rooted propagation plug intact, then carefully bagged and packed for shipping. Your cutting will arrive ready to be potted up or planted after appropriate acclimation.

Because these are live plants, size and appearance will naturally vary from plant to plant.

When your cutting arrives, open the package promptly and inspect the plant. Any concerns with your order must be reported within 3 days of delivery and include photos.

Rooted cuttings have been grown in protected greenhouse conditions and will need to be gradually acclimated to outdoor conditions before planting outside.
