RM Dragon’s Blood is what happens when a dahlia decides subtlety is wildly overrated. Deep, saturated blood-red blooms, nearly black stems, and the occasional lick of fiery gold along the petals give this one enough drama to make an ordinary red dahlia quietly reconsider its life choices.
Bred by Hailey and Mike of River Merle Farm in Olympia, Washington, RM Dragon’s Blood is a 2026 introduction with blooms measuring approximately 3.5 inches. The flowers live primarily in that rich crimson-to-blood-red range, but individual blooms can throw flashes of fiery gold along the petal edges. Against those long, dark stems, the effect is downright spectacular.
River Merle reports plants approaching 6 feet tall in their garden and describes them as loaded with flowers throughout the season. That combination of smaller blooms, long stems, serious plant height, and intense coloring makes Dragon’s Blood particularly tempting for the cutting garden.
And then there’s the name.
You simply cannot call something Dragon’s Blood and expect The Gardening Moose to describe it as “a lovely red flower.” This thing looks like it escaped from a medieval castle, torched the pastel section of the garden, and decided to stick around for bouquet season.

Moose’s Take
Some dahlias whisper.
RM Dragon’s Blood kicks open the garden gate wearing a black cape.
The dark stems alone would have gotten The Gardening Moose’s attention, but put those blood-red blooms on top and occasionally light the petal edges on fire with gold? Oh, come on. Now we’re just showing off.
This is exactly the kind of dahlia Moose loves—distinctive enough that you don’t need to squint at the tag to remember what you planted, dramatic without becoming ridiculous, and carrying just enough
