RM Illusion

RM Illusion Dahlia

Coral. Gold. Fuchsia. Green. RM Illusion apparently looked at choosing one color and decided that sounded unnecessarily restrictive.

A 2026 introduction from River Merle Farm in Olympia, Washington, RM Illusion was bred from the River Merle hybridizing program created by Hailey and Mike. This BB Formal Decorative produces substantial 4–4.5 inch blooms on tall plants reaching approximately 5.5 feet.

The petals glow in warm coral with flashes of gold along the tips, while the reverse brings an unexpected hit of vivid fuchsia. Young blooms may even open around a green center before that color quietly disappears as the flower matures.

Hence the name.

Just when you think you've figured out what color RM Illusion is, it changes the evidence and requests another hearing.

The blooms are full, polished, and beautifully structured, with enough color variation between the fronts, tips, and backs of the petals to make the flower look different depending on the angle and stage of bloom. It is especially good at creating depth without becoming visually chaotic—which is a very elegant way of saying this dahlia has several personalities and somehow all of them dressed appropriately.

Plants are vigorous and tall, so plan on providing good support. At roughly 5.5 feet, RM Illusion is not interested in quietly lurking near the front of the flower bed pretending to be petite.

Moose’s Take

RM Illusion is what happens when a dahlia refuses to pick a color and somehow gets away with it. Coral, gold, fuchsia, even a little green—it changes as the bloom matures and looks different from every angle.

Tall, vigorous, and absolutely not subtle. Apparently, subtlety was the real illusion.
