RM Mirage

A shape-shifting River Merle beauty that starts the season in yellow and pinky mauve, then quietly swaps wardrobes for buff, tan and raspberry. Apparently committing to one color was never part of the plan.

RM Mirage is a 2026 introduction created by Hailey and Mike at River Merle Farm in Olympia, Washington, USA—and the name may be one of the more accurate warnings ever attached to a dahlia.

This one does not stay put.

River Merle first grew Mirage from seed in 2022, eventually selecting it for its beautiful formal decorative form and especially unusual color progression. Early in the season, the approximately 3.5–4 inch blooms can open in soft yellow mixed with pinky-mauve tones. As the season moves along and growing conditions change, the palette begins shifting toward warm buff and tan, with raspberry appearing on the undersides of the petals and along the edges.

Basically, you can stare directly at RM Mirage in July, come back later in the season, and wonder whether somebody switched dahlias while you were getting a sandwich.

They did not.

Mirage is just doing Mirage things.

That changing palette is a huge part of its appeal. Rather than giving you one predictable color all summer, the plant produces a progression of muted, romantic tones that can move surprisingly well between different color groups in the garden or bouquet. Stonehouse Dahlias specifically notes its usefulness as a blender flower, and it isn't hard to see why—yellow, mauve, buff, tan and raspberry give this little bloom an unreasonable number of friends.

Plants reach approximately 3.5–4 feet tall, while the blooms stay around the 3.5–4 inch range.

Moose's Take: RM Mirage appears to have looked at the concept of “flower color” and decided it was merely a suggestion. Buy it for the yellow and mauve, keep it for the buff and raspberry, and spend August explaining to visitors that, yes, those really did come from the same plant.

Moose’s Take

RM Mirage is what happens when a dahlia develops commitment issues—in the best possible way. Just when you think you’ve figured out what color it is, it wanders backstage, changes outfits, and comes back pretending nothing happened.

Early blooms bring soft yellow and pinky-mauve tones, while later flowers can slide into buff and tan with those fantastic raspberry undersides and picotee edges. It’s less of a color palette and more of an ongoing identity crisis.

And Moose approves.

This is exactly the kind of dahlia I love growing: unusual without being obnoxious, sophisticated without looking like it requires its own sommelier, and different enough throughout the season that you keep wandering back over to see what nonsense it’s up to now.

If you like dahlias that behave predictably, RM Mirage may not be your girl.

If you enjoy opening the gate every morning and asking, “Alright, what the heck are you wearing today?”

Welcome to the herd.
