Skeena Sockeye Dahlia
Rich coral coloring, Canadian breeding, and a place among the breeder's favorite cut flowers make Skeena Sockeye a dahlia worth getting excited about. Developed by Meg Hoole of Medeek Meadows Dahlia Farm in British Columbia, this beautiful variety brings warm, vibrant color to the garden and cutting patch.
Some dahlias have a way of making you stop and look twice. Skeena Sockeye is one of those varieties.
Bred by Meg Hoole at Medeek Meadows Dahlia Farm in Terrace, British Columbia, Skeena Sockeye brings beautiful coral coloring to the garden. Coral is one of those wonderfully complicated colors that lives somewhere between pink, orange, and red, giving it a warmth and richness that can be difficult to find in other flowers.
And Skeena Sockeye has something particularly appealing going for it: the breeder herself includes it among her favorite coral dahlias for cut flowers.
That's an endorsement worth paying attention to.
Meg Hoole's Skeena breeding program focuses on developing beautiful dahlias that also have practical value for flower growers. Skeena Sockeye earned a place on her list of favorite cutting varieties, making it an exciting choice for gardeners who love bringing their flowers indoors.
Coral dahlias are especially versatile in floral arrangements. Pair Skeena Sockeye with cream and white flowers for a fresh, elegant combination, or mix it with apricot, peach, yellow, and other warm tones for a bouquet that practically glows. For something a little different, try combining it with lavender or mauve flowers for a striking contrast.
The variety takes its name from the Skeena collection, developed in British Columbia, where the Skeena River is famous for its salmon. Whether that connection inspired this particular cultivar's name hasn't been confirmed, but the rich coral coloring certainly makes the association fitting.
Although detailed measurements for Skeena Sockeye are not widely documented, its inclusion among the breeder's preferred cutting dahlias makes it a promising addition to a cutting garden.
For gardeners who appreciate unusual varieties, beautiful coral flowers, and dahlias developed by dedicated independent breeders, Skeena Sockeye has plenty to offer.

Moose's Take
I have to admit, a dahlia named after a sockeye salmon caught my attention.
Most flowers get names that sound like they belong at a fancy garden party. This one sounds like it should be fighting its way upstream in Alaska.
And I kind of like that.
The coral coloring is a natural fit for the name, and the fact that the breeder considers it one of her favorite cutting dahlias makes it even more interesting.
I've always appreciated dahlias that can do more than just look pretty in the garden. If they're going to take up valuable real estate, it's nice when they can earn their keep in a bouquet, too.
